Photograph Notes: Freight trains would once wait to enter the marshalling yard at Radyr from the pits up the Valleys, with coal for distribution to the UK and the world via Cardiff, Barry and Swansea docks. Here during the late afternoon a coal train waits for the signal along with one of the class 08 shunting locomotives that were used to shunt the many yards like Radyr. Since this photograph was taken the coal mines are all history along with Radyr yard. The signal gantry is also long gone, replaced with more modern colour lights.
