Photograph Notes: A Brighton-bound train enters the tunnel on the down line. This is the location of one of the earliest rail disasters in August 1861 where one northbound train was confused by the signalmen to be the second, the second stopped in the tunnel and a third ran into the back of the second, killing 23 people and injuring 176. The Brighton assistant station master was acquitted of manslaughter. The house on top of the tunnel entrance used to be inhabited, and I understand is now available as a holiday home.
